Reading: Foundational Skills Standard 1 (Print Concepts)

Kindergarten

Demonstrate understanding of the organization and basic features of print.

a. Follow words from left to right, top to bottom, and page by page.
  • Drama and Dance: Draw words or letters in the air, left to right. Use fingers, arms, head, feet, props (scarves, sticks, etc.), etc. 
  • Music: Track lyrics while listening to or singing a song.
b. Recognize that spoken words are represented in written language by specific sequences of letters.
  • Art: Use a variety of art processes to write basic letters and words (watercolors, collage, clay sculpture, engraving, earth art, finger paints, markers, colored pencils).
  • Drama and Dance: Draw words or letters in the air. Use fingers, arms, head, feet, props (scarves, sticks, etc.), etc. 
  • Music: Sing phonics songs; add actions (see songs listed under d, below)

c. Understand that words are separated by spaces in print.
  • Art: Book making; Make individual words with a variety of art processes (painting, drawing, etc.)
d. Recognize and name all upper- and lowercase letters of the alphabet.


First Grade

Demonstrate understanding of the organization and basic features of print.

a. Recognize the distinguishing features of a sentence (e.g., first word, capitalization, ending punctuation).
  • Music and Drama: Phonetic punctuation (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6bpIbdZhrzA): Use sounds, actions, or musical instruments for punctuation marks. 
  • Dance: Freeze dance to represent punctuation marks. Walk during a sentence and freeze at the end like the punctuation mark. 
  • Art: Book making; Make individual words with a variety of art processes (painting, drawing, etc.)
