Qualities of Highly Effective Integrated Arts Experiences
Complex. The focus of the experience includes the development of key arts skills. Increasing levels of skill are balanced with appropriate challenges (autotelic experience). Experiences are developmentally appropriate and represent a full spectrum from the Webb’s Depth of Knowledge “levels.”
Organized. Transitions into and out of the experience are thoroughly planned. Problems are anticipated. Viable options are established for quick finishers. Materials are assembled beforehand. Instructions are clear and usually given at the beginning (including checking for understanding).
Relevant. Arts experiences reflect what people (especially children) would normally do. Experiences are culturally authentic and appropriate, aimed first at deepening and then broadening cultural perspectives. This particular arts integration will be meaningful to these particular children.
Engaging. Students are actively engaged physically (flexibility, balance, fine motor, coordination, axial and locomotor movement), cognitively, and emotionally/expressively. Experiences satisfy needs for relatedness, autonomy, and competence and address 21st Century Skills (communication, collaboration, creativity, critical thinking).
